The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is taking place in Expo City, Dubai, UAE from November 30 to Decemeber 12, 2023.

COP28 will see the conclusion of the first two-year stocktake process of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which started at COP26. As COP28 comes to an end, an assessment of the world’s collective progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement will be shared. 

The International CCS Knowledge Centre is a registered Business NGO at COP28 and is joining the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), the Gulf Coast Carbon Center, the Bellona Foundation and the International Energy Agency’s GHG (IEAGHG) program as the CCS delegation, to share information about the critical role CCS plays in meeting international emissions reduction commitments and to assist countries in developing CCS projects as part of their climate change strategies.

The Knowledge Centre's Vice-President of Policy, Regulatory and Stakeholder Relations Beth (Hardy) Valiaho and Senior Policy Analyst Mac Walton will be in attendance throughout COP28 and will take part in the following events:

• December 3, 10:10 - 11:10 (local time): Delivering Net Zero: A Guide to Deploying CCUS Projects in the Cement Industry. Join representatives from the International CCS Knowledge Centre, the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and international cement companies to learn more about the development of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) as a key pathway for the production of carbon-neutral cement by 2050. This panel discussion will include an overview of a new guidebook for undertaking CCUS projects in the cement sector produced for GCCA members, leveraging the experience and lessons learned from existing CCUS projects in heavy-emitting industries around the world. • December 3, 11:30 - 13:00 (local time): COP28 official CCS side event - Can Carbon Capture and Storage Decarbonise the Cement Sector in Developed and Developing Economies? Featuring a panel discussion with representatives from the International CCS Knowledge Centre, the Global Cement and Concrete Association, U.S. Department of Energy, CCSA, IEAGHG, University of Texas at Austin, Bellona Foundation. • December 4, 9:00 - 10:00 (local time): Creating CO₂ Storage and Transport Infrastructure. A panel discussion about how the availability of CO2 transport and storage infrastructure is a key prerequisite for effective CCUS deployment in the cement sector - with representatives from the International CCS Knowledge Centre, the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), IEAGHG, the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative, Storegga, University of Texas at Austin, DESNZ UK. Location: GCCA's Concrete Future Pavilion in the Thematic Arena - Blue Zone. • December 4, 11:00 - 13:00 (local time): Big Funds, Big Tech and the Carbon Management Revolution. Beth (Hardy) Valiaho will moderate a panel discussion that will explore how the billions of dollars required for the expansion of large-scale CCS and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects can be unlocked so that projects can get underway quickly. Panel members will include representatives from Svante, Carbon Engineering and Carbon Direct. • December 4, 14:00 - 14:30 (local time): Saskatchewan's CCS Leadership. Join the International CCS Knowledge Centre's Senior Policy Analyst Mac Walton for a look at the province of Saskatchewan's pioneering work on the world's first carbon capture and storage facility on a coal-fired power plant and the valuable knowledge and lessons learned that are helping to reduce risk, lower cost and improve performance of the next wave of large-scale CCS projects worldwide. • December 5, 15:00 - 17:00 (local time): Net Zero 2050 - How CCS Will Advance Canada's Climate Targets. This panel discussion will explore Canada's progress in mitigating carbon emissions through cutting-edge CCS technologies, and will delve into the innovation driving Alberta's CCS, its positive impact to Indigenous communities, the jobs and economic impacts created by CCS projects, and how the provincial carbon pricing system makes these projects possible. Panelists to include representatives from the Pathways Alliance, MEG Energy, Imperial Oil and the Knowledge Centre. Location: Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN) Pavilion - Thematic Arena 3, Opportunity Petal (TA3 - 170)
• December 6, 10:00 - 10:45 (local time): Capturing Your Attention: Premiers' CCS Dialogue. Beth (Hardy) Valiaho will host a discussion on the opportunities and challenges bringing CCS projects to life across Canada with the Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith, the Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe and Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Environment and Climate Change Bernard Davis. • December 6, 15:00 - 17:00 (local time): Capturing Attention: Sharing CCS Knowledge. Discussion with representatives from the International CCS Knowledge Centre and Emissions Reduction Alberta.
