Flue Gas Characterization

Flue gas isn’t just CO2—it’s a complex mix of components that can significantly impact the performance of your carbon capture system.

These elements affect operational efficiency, environmental compliance, and health and safety standards. Characterizing flue gas for capture differs from standard environmental testing, requiring a more detailed analysis to ensure success.

At the International CCS Knowledge Centre, we offer flue gas characterization services before you design your facility. By analyzing your specific flue gas composition, we help you identify potential issues early, ensuring your carbon capture system is optimized from the start.

Detailed Analysis for Informed Decisions

Our service provides a thorough understanding of the various components in your flue gas stream, including their concentrations and variability over time. This analysis is essential for:

Operational Performance

Identifying and managing components that could affect the efficiency and longevity of the carbon capture system.

Environmental, Health & Safety

Helping to ensure system performance will meet regulatory standards.

Risk Mitigation

Statistical analysis of test data and past operational trends rooted in real-world expertise to minimize unforeseen issues that could impact the system’s performance and operational costs.

Our Three-Level Approach

Level 1: Basic Analysis

We begin by collecting essential data from existing sources like Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and standard air permitting tests. This foundational data offers valuable insights into the major components and their variability over time.

Level 2: Minor and Trace Component Analysis

Level 2 dives deeper into minor and trace components that are critical to your carbon capture system. Instead of conducting costly individual tests, we measure total levels of key components like hydrocarbons or particulate matter. If these levels are high, we recommend further testing in Level 3.

Level 3: Advanced Testing

For critical components that require precise measurement, Level 3 offers advanced testing methods. This includes specialized techniques for low-level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measurement and detailed particulate analysis, ensuring your system is fully optimized and de-risked.

Lowering Solvent-Related Risks

A complete and accurate characterization of flue gas is essential for lowering solvent-related risks in amine-based carbon capture projects. By providing detailed data on all components, especially trace constituents, we enable solvent vendors to better predict and manage potential negative outcomes, ensuring a more reliable and cost-effective carbon capture solution.

Tailored to Your Needs

At the International CCS Knowledge Centre, we take the guesswork out of flue gas analysis. By offering a tiered approach to characterization, we help you identify and address potential challenges early in the design process, minimizing risks and optimizing your carbon capture system for success.
